From Library JournalTwenty eminent and sober historians (14 Hungarian, four American, one Canadian, one Austrian) have contributed their scholarship to this weighty, erudite, but readily accessible general history of Hungary. The volume has been carefully edited "in accordance with specified uniform guidelines" to avoid the disjuncture sometimes achieved by collections of essays, and the result is a successful introductory history aimed at collegiate undergraduates and better-informed or interested general readers. Chronology of coverage extends deep beyond Jorg Hoensch's History of Modern Hungary: 1867-1986 ( LJ 10/1/88), and the analyses coordinate nicely the political, military, social, and economic components of Hungary's long and colorful history.
