From Library Journal This new reference volume from a leading publisher on international affairs provides excellent information on 18 Western European countries, Canada, the United States, and Turkey. Briefer coverage is given to Eastern Europe, and there are excellent sections on the European Community and NATO. Chapters on each country provide summary economic, demographic, statistical, and political information, with the narrative section focusing on the most recent electoral and political developments. A lexicon of key political terms and slogans for each country is of limited use as some slogans are outdated or never very widely used. The author also has a penchant for developing his own set of acronyms for key political and economic measures, e.g., "PCR" (per capita representation for the number of people per national elected official), that are confusing and meaningless to most readers. Apart from these problems, this new reference volume is more accessible to general readers than the other leading work, The Europa World Year Book 1990 (31st ed.). However, Europa is more comprehensive in both its political and economic facts and will remain the standard reference for informed laypersons and scholars.- Frank L.
