From School Library JournalKindergarten-Grade 3-Andrew's father gives him a supply of white paper and a box of magic crayons. With them, the boy draws pictures of every kind of monster imaginable and plasters them all over his room. Admiring his work, he then adds party hats and horns to each and wishes they could have a real party. When Andrew goes to bed, the drawings come to life and hide. When he finds blank papers on the walls, he follows some sounds to the attic, where the creatures are throwing a surprise party for him. After the revelry, they all go back to their rightful spots and go to sleep. Berlan provides a fine fantasy with just enough tension for the picture-book crowd. The simple, humorous illustrations are done in pen and ink and watercolor. They are not in any way scary; rather, many of the beasts look like friendly dinosaurs of the Barney variety. A colorful and appealing selection.Andrew W. Hunter, Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg, Charlotte, NCCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.Product DescriptionAndrew loves to draw monsters with his special magic crayons and receives an extraordinary surprise when his drawings come to life and the monsters plan a special party just for him. From Publishers WeeklyThe artistic hero of this bedtime caper takes his love of monsters a step too far when he decides to paint pictures of them "on his shirts and sheets." Andrew's father then gives the boy "magic monster crayons," informing him that they " only work on paper." So Andrew busily sketches one benign monster after another, hanging the drawings on his bedroom wall. One evening, he draws party hats on each monster; he later awakens to the sound of whispering and rustling. Discovering that his pictures are now only blank sheets of paper, Andrew goes in search of his monsters--and receives a scrumptious surprise. Like Andrew, Chambliss ( Dad's Car Wash ; The Mother's Day Sandwich ) proves a resourceful artist, who creatively transforms her two-dimensional, homespun monsters into festive, full-size partygoers. Berlan's first book is peppered with jaunty verbs ("Something flopped and hopped and clopped down the hall"); her chipper, descriptive text ("monsters with thirty-three toes with terrible claws") provides amusing assistance in vivifying these eponymous creatures.
