Product DescriptionA simple account of the life of Black Elk, the visionary and Oglala medicine man who had a vision of universal peace and felt that he saw his people's dream die at Wounded KneeFrom School Library JournalGrade 2-4-- Black Elk, an Ogala Sioux Indian, envisioned peace but instead saw the progressive demise of his tribe during his lifetime. The text, accompanied by vivid full-color and black-and-white photos, etchings, posters, and paintings conveys a rich historical drama. But there are also confusing passages, gaps, and omissions; one page mentions that ". . . the soldiers tricked Crazy Horse and he was killed" but doesn't state how. The telling progresses in leaps: from Black Elk's birth in 1863 to the battle of Wounded Knee in 1890, to 1931 when he tells his story, to his death in 1950. On the other hand, Jacques Cousteau is a crisply written biography that captures the essence of that man's lifework. Brief, rhythmic paragraphs within five well-defined chapters explore how an early fascination with the sea, films, and machinery led Cousteau to several exciting careers. Vibrant, varied full-color and black-and-white captioned photos are well integrated within the text, conveying his dedication to his mission. This book updates and complements Genie Iverson's Jacques Cousteau (Putnam, 1976). That title more accessibly relates Cousteau's early life, but overall pales in comparison because it is less comprehensive. --Renee Blumenkrantz, Davis Community Lib . , Bethesda, MDCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
