Product DescriptionAs Charles Tiger looks for his lost roar he encounters many animal friends. From School Library Journalea. vol: illus. by author. unpaged. CIP. Joy St/Little. 1988. PSm $9.70. PreSchool-K Two charming books for toddlers. Charles Tiger wakes up one morning minus his roar. In his search for it, he meets several of his neighbors, but he doesn't find his roar until it is frightened out of him by a small hairy spider. Elizabeth Hen , so proud of the egg that she has just laid, feels that she must tell all the animals on the farm. In turn, she tells the cow and her two calves, the sheep and her three lambs, and so on until she reaches the rabbit and her ten babies. When the little hen returns to her nest, she finds her egg cracking and rocking, and, when her one little chick pops out, Elizabeth is even more proud. Although some readers might quibble with Elizabeth's aptitude as a mothershe never actually sits on her eggand the apparent time span between laying and hatching, the book functions well as a counting book and an introduction to farm animals. Lillian McCrea's Mother Hen (Picture Book Studio, 1987) is a much better mother, but Elizabeth has more charm and will appeal to a much younger audience. Both books employ a similar style of cartoon-like illustrations executed in watercolors with scratchy outlines. The expressive and appealing illustrations, especially those of the wistful Charles, will speak to toddlers and preschoolers alike. The size and clarity of the paintings make both of these books natural choices for infant and toddler story hours.
