From Kirkus Reviews Sixteen eerie tales, retold with varying success. Most compelling is ``Tiny Man,'' from ``Legends of the Cars'' (Folklore, 1891), a haunting tale reminiscent of ``The Buried Moon.'' An excerpt from Lagerlof's The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (1907) concerns a talking stork on Easter Eve, hardly a representative sample of this classic fantasy about a boy who is transformed into an elf and flies about on a wild goose. A prose version of the ballad ``Binnorie'' (``The Haunted Harp'') does little to make that story accessible or appealing to young readers. For the most part, a disappointing contribution from this fine storyteller. Sources; illustrations not seen. (Nonfiction. 10-12) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. Product Description A collection of folk tales from around the world featuring ghosts, witches, and monsters From School Library Journal Grade 3-7-- Sixteen ghost stories, retold by a master storyteller. Each is illustrated with an appropriately spooky black-and-white painting. The ghosts come from every continent and many cultures, from Europe to Australia, from Jewish to Hindu. A brief introduction to the collection, as well as one for each tale, lures readers in. Hodges's polished retellings retain the flavor of the originals, whether she adapts Joel Chandler Harris or an old Scottish ballad. Five of the stories listed in the bibliography come from books that are still in print, but only one, the Grimms' "Godfather Death," is widely accessible. Maria Leach's classic collection, The Thing at the Foot of the Bed (Philomel, 1987), offers shorter, simpler stories and some ghost lore, and includes more comprehensive notes. The same is true of Alvin Schwartz's More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (Lippincott, 1984), which, along with Molly Bang's The Goblins Giggle (Peter Smith, 1988), has artistically stronger illustrations. The new title's handsome design; its longer, more literary stories; and its ethnic diversity make it a useful complement to its predecessors. A book that's valuable for storytelling, read-alouds, or reading alone. --Margaretret A. Chang, Buxton School, Williamstown, MACopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
