Product DescriptionBold lions love roar, roar, roaring, while cubs play racing and chasing ...Young children will love meeting all the wild and wonderful animals in this fun-packed picture-book safari, with galloping zebras, prowling tigers, water-squirting elephants, jumping kangaroos and more! From BooklistAnother exclamatory collaboration from the author and illustrator of Choo Choo Clickety-Clack! (2005), this picture book celebrates wild animals amid some wildly hued settings (hot-pink skies and royal purple mountains are just the beginning) that manage to complement the text rather than distract from it. Ayliffe’s cut-paper collages pop off the page in a friendly way. Animal families abound, tigers smile, and lions don’t really seem fierce. Likewise, Mayo’s words describe animal activities that children can relate to: climbing, crouching, hiding, munching. Each spread features a wonderfully concise four-line poem ending with a kid-appealing exhortation: “Tall giraffes love stretch, stretch, stretching / long necks going up. . . up . . . reaching, / black tongues flicking, lips leaf picking / So stretch, tall giraffes, stretch!” Concluding with a final spread picturing many sleeping animals and a few still wide awake, this book cheers on movement and activity-even at night! Grades K-2. --Abby NolanReviewEleven species of wild animals frolic in their habitats. Two-page spreads in vividly bright colors depict animal groups engaging in their favorite activities. While the biggest lion roars, the cubs are "racing, chasing, scrambling." Zebras gallop in a herd against a setting sun, monkeys swing through the trees and pandas munch on bamboo leaves. There are also elephants, tigers, giraffes, hippos, leopards, kangaroos and bears. A final spread shows all the included animals in a single landscape. Mayo's text is simple but catchy in its repeated gerunds. Ayliffe's cut-paper illustrations nearly jump off the page - their simplicity might encourage young listeners to make their own pictures with cut outs - and each spread is an appealing riot of color. Should attract the very young, who might get the mistaken idea that kangaroos, panda bears and lions all live near each other.
